Typography : Task 3B : Type Design and Communication

●Lectures
Week 11 :
We were told what we have to do on task 3B which is created for
message app as sticker. For this, we were given the list of letters of
anniversary like "Happy Birthday". And we were allowed to create with minor
elements, but we have to create with black and white only in this
time.
Week12 :
We got some advices of this task by Mr Vinod and Mr Shamsul. And we were
given time to improve it then share it with getting feedback. Also, we were
lectured how to put the highlight and shadow on.
●Instructions
1. Set your art board size to 512 x 512 px (Adobe Illustrator)
2. Choose an appropriate typeface from the 10 given
3. Use Black & White only until design is confirmed/approved
4. Save artwork as PDF & PNG, upload/embed onto e-portfolio.
You may use minor graphical elements or visuals to aid in your message and design. You may use the appropriate color schemes after getting the black and white version approved. Ensure that the expression occupies the space and is legible and readable for its intended use.
Upon completion of the designed sticker, selected stickers will be used for social platforms Telegram/WhatsApp.
Design an attractive, functional, and visually impactful sticker. You may use Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop for the task.

●Visual research

I search some examples with Pinterest to get an idea. There are a
lot of kind of type design and shape of elements for expressing means.
For the left one, it is colorful and interesting shape. Those are kind
of little image, but are clear to see. And for the right one with only
black and white, it is really interesting type design. I just like it.
●Idea exploration
First of all, I think about what is "Happy Typography Day" and then
sketch with the paper. It is kind of difficult to express its meaning
but, I got the idea with fingerprint because we used phone or pc to
type something. So I just put the element, fingerprint on this task
design.

Actually, Mr Vinod told me to create without some elements
because I can express "Typography" more clearly that is why I
tried to create again without elements. I just wanted to create
it simple but also interesting, so I created like these. For the
left design, I used Futura and add some shape to show interest.
And for the right one, same of left one, I used Futura and add
some more. I think I should to emphasis between the letter and
background that is why I selected the shape, circle on
background.

The elements of background are colored by gradation and put
the highlight and shadow on to make contrast with the letter.

In the lecture on week 12, Mr Vinod gave me some feedback
how to improve these idea. I need go for the right design and
focus on the color. Mr Vinod said that the background is
colorful make the letter more indistinct, so I tried to think
about the contrast and emphasis. Then I improve the design more
clearly.

●Final design
Finally, I made it in sticker with Telegram, " the Telegram sticker bot ". I got the advice for this design by Mr Vinod, it need to focus on the color scheme. So I tried to think about contrast and emphasis between the letter and background. I put the only one color for the background and the metallic color for the letter because I just wanted to show like modern.

The reason I chosen yellow for the shape of background is the light color can emphasis the letter than dark color, I thought. Also, Mr Vinod said that many color can make it without emphasis.

●Feedback
Week 11 :
Specific feedback
Mr Vinod said that you can express "typography" more and
more without some elements. Also, I have to focus on the space
which should be minor. I should express big and clear.
General feedback
I have to do the task more quickly and dynamic.
Week 12 :
Specific feedback
I have to think about the type and color scheme. If there
are a lot of color, the letter is not clear to see. I need to
put the simple color on and add some details like highlight and
shadow.
General feedback
The design of right one is interesting but need to improve
as sticker which is legible.
●Reflections
>Experience
It is first time for me to create the sticker
of message app, so I could enjoy challenging. But
also it was really difficult for me to think about the
letter means, "Typography". It seems easy to create but,
it is not needed to put some elements that is why I
confused to create it many times.
>Observations
For this task, I notice how is difficult to
create design with letter. It is needed to think about a
lot of kind of things such as color scheme and size.
Actually, I could learn the color to emphasis some thing
which is needed to legible.
>Findings
In the lecture on Week 12, Mr Shamsul told us the
color variations like metal design and so on. Before I
learn this, I created some color by myself and always
confused with it. It is really important for me to
notice in order to create some more quickly.

I just read this Japanese typography design book to get idea as example, inspiration. There are variety type design and rules of them. I learned that how to make the logo with typography in good composition using color and so on. So I thought it is good book for me to do this task, create sticker for Telegram or something. Actually, I just noticed that it is really important to make the rule of type design because it can make unity and harmony.
