Final Project : Stop Motion Video

Week 01 (28/03/2022) :

- Visual research

Watch Munich 2005 ‧ Thriller/Drama ‧ 2h 44m
Munich will be used as a reference for story structure and sound design in week 3.

View stop motion shorts(Youtube/Vimeo)
Shortlisted 3 and share it on Blog (Final Project section) with rationale (style, art direction, character design etc).

Award-Winning Stop Motion Short Film | Love Me, Fear Me :

It shows diversity emotion and human with just only cray. It's made simply, but express correctly with music and cray color. Also the shape of cray are different between all of parts that is why you can enjoy it and make sure directly. The movement is also smoothly, so I was just inspired.

A Love Story | BAFTA-winning Short Animation Film by Anushka Naanayakkara :

Also this short animation doesn't have some script, but express love clearly. Just because you can see emotion of face. It's created by only string that is the best reason I chosen. With a lot of color and quality of strings shows you complex but also express love story as well. So nice.

あたしだけを見て / Look at Me Only - Animation Short Firm :

This animation is so interesting to see because it is really adorable but also a bit fear. It also has sounds of their voice and some details, so you can enjoy it more and more. To add I really like how to shoot it with nice angle and lightning.

Week 06 (02/05/2022) :

1. Define the theme(choose one):

2. Watch lots of stop motions (online).

Choose the type of stop motion: Clay? Paper cut-out? Lego?

Stop Motion Tutorial: Transformations

So for this task, I selected the social issue, "Marine plastics issue (microplastics)".

According to the international NGO WWF, a total of 150 million tonnes of plastic litter is said to already exist in the world's oceans. It is estimated that at least 8 million tonnes of new plastic waste is entering the oceans every year, and that if no action is taken at this rate, by 2050 the amount will exceed the total weight of all fish living in the oceans. It has been pointed out that over time these will become 'microplastics' of less than five millimetres in size and may be contained in drinking water, salt, etc. It is also certain that they are taken up by fish and other marine organisms and ultimately ingested by humans.

WWF made the shocking announcement that "on average, people consume the equivalent of one credit card (about 5g) of plastic per week".

In a country-by-country comparison of plastic waste (2015), Japan is second only to the United States in terms of per capita waste. It is also the third largest exporter of waste plastic in the world (in the first half of 2018) after Hong Kong and the USA, an embarrassing situation from an international perspective.

– Story out line

This story shows the vicious circle of the social issue, "Marine plastics issue (microplastics)".

The beginning of  smiling human, the microplastic comes up. Plastic waste is washed away by wind and rain during the process of littering and transport to waste disposal facilities, and ends up in the sea through sewage systems. Plastic waste that washes up on beaches is subjected to waves and sand and exposed to strong ultraviolet radiation. The plastic does not decompose naturally over time and remains as fine fragments, which become litter in the sea. Very small microplastics can be mistaken for food by sea-dwelling organisms. Through the marine food chain, when smaller organisms such as fish eat microplastics, they are eaten by larger organisms. As humans are at the top of the food chain, humans who eat fish caught in the ocean will also eat microplastics. Plastic is not digested when eaten and is expelled through the stomach and intestines, but toxic substances contained in or on the surface of the plastic are taken up and absorbed by the body.

(From this social issue, I tried to express with clay this time because it can show vicious circle.)

I tried to draw the draft sketch for storyboard and character design as well. After I got feedback from Mr Martin, I also focused on composing the story clearly and shortly. I made brief animation for clarify the story as well.

1.1 The draft of story

1.2 The draft of story and details of characters

1.3 The brief animation for storyboard

After I learn how to use camera and lighting in the lecture, I tried to make own animation in this studio in myself. It's kind of interesting shooting for final project. I really appreciated Mr Martin to make me this opportunity! I could enjoy creating this animation and exploring my skill of stop motion as well.

1.4 The process of shooting in studio

After I finished shooting, I tried to import in Photoshop, Aftereffect and Premium pro to know which make it effectively. From this, I noticed that it's kind of complex and difficult for me to edit in Photoshop and this couldn't export clearly. So I re-edited in Aftereffect and adjust it directly and quickly than Photoshop.

1.5 The process of editing in Photoshop

After I could edit them in one animation, I focused on adding the sounds which is fit with it. I downloaded it from this website as free.

For the BGM, I used the Adobe stock which is cost though. There is various BGM so I could enjoy looking for the audio which is most fit and express the mood.

1.6 The process of editing in Aftereffect

Finally, I imported in Premium pro to add some effect. These process took time but also really exciting as well. Also I put the effect which I prepared before. The effect filter is called 80's effect, one of them show color change, another one express kind of blur and noise.

1.8 All of effect I prepared

1.9 The details of effect 80's 01 and 02

●Final Design

"VICIOUS CIRCLE" in 30sec stop motion animation

The beginning of a smiling human, the microplastic comes up. The plastic does not decompose naturally over time and remains as fine fragments, which become litter in the sea. Very small microplastics can be mistaken for food by sea-dwelling organisms. Then as humans are at the top of the food chain, humans who eat fish caught in the ocean will also eat microplastics. Hence It shows a vicious circle.

●Feedback

Week 01 :
General feedback
I searched a lot kinds of stop motion in YouTube for visual research of this project. I really amazed that it is really complicated and sensitive to shoot it and edit it. It felt me so nervous to do it for task as well, but also I've been looking forward to explore skills of creative, design.

Week 06-09 :
General feedback
So for this final project, I chosen the social issues. I could learn about topic as well. Also, I tried to create story to express it.

Specific feedback
I got feedbacks of my idea for final design. Mr Martin said that I have to compose the story more short and clearly because the stop motion task only has 30 second to create. That is why I re-create it to express clearly.

Week 10 :
General feedback
We required that we have to decide the date for editing tutorial session. After that, we got feedback and discussed our storyboard and details as well.

Specific feedback
Most of all was good, but also I need to think about the point that is most thing I want tell to audience. So I just decide to express it in the end of scene that the human who eaten the fish with plastic is melting and died. Also I have to buy the clay I'll use for this task.

Week 11 :
General feedback
For this week, we did tutorial how to shoot stop motion. In this session, I did director for showing example of stop motion using cray. For this experience made me so excited because I could see classmate as well. We could learn how to use the camera setting, lighting and background materials. After that also we discussed how to edit it with Adobe tools such as After effect, Photoshop and Premium pro.

Specific feedback
For my story, I can create it with two pattern background which is between ocean and land. To add, I can use studio(E1,01) for assignment another day.

Week 12 :
General feedback
For this week, we got feedback for this final project and discussed how to improve it. I just see after this with recorded lecture though.

Specific feedback
No feedback this time because I couldn't attend this session.

Week 13 :
General feedback
We discussed how to compose final design, improve it in this week lecture. I got inspiration from others design as well.

Specific feedback
For my design, overall is good enough, but I need to show details of the effect I added 80's mood filter in premium pro. I can update the screenshot or some link to google sheet as well.

●Reflections

>Experience
I can only said that I could enjoy this project.  Especially it's first time for me to create the stop motion animation that is why this experience is really good for me to explore my potential of art style.

>Observations
For transforming scene, I just realized how difficult expression is. It's needed to focus on some details for move it smoothly and clearly. It's needed all scene as well though, I mean that this transforming scene was the most difficult for me to show animation smoothly.

>Findings
For editing tool, I thought that using Photoshop isn't recommended for stop motion animation instead of using Aftereffect and Premium pro. Photoshop is for image and so on like the thing which doesn't move.

>Further readings/references

For this project, I tried to learned about social issues, microplastic and stop motion with some Japanese book and tutorial. in YouTube in order to understand this project's importance deeply.

海洋プラスチック汚染 「プラなし」博士、ごみを語る」 / 'Marine plastic pollution: 'No plastic,' Dr., talks rubbish,' says the headline.

The issue of plastics in the oceans has received a lot of attention in the United Nations and at summits, and it has now become a major international concern. This book is a thorough collection of all we've learned about marine plastic contamination so far.

It gives a thorough summary of what we know about marine plastic pollution so far.

  • When plastics spread and accumulate in the water, what is the problem?
  • What causes it to wind up in the sea?
  • Where does a lot of it originate?
  • What happens when it reaches the sea?
  • What are our options for resolving this issue?
  • Why hasn't plastic recycling progressed?

The film will examine the issue from a range of perspectives, including.

プラスチックスープの海ー北太平洋巨大ごみベルトは警告する / The North Pacific Giant Garbage Belt warns of oceans of plastic soup.

Huge swaths of plastic garbage are drifting eerily off the California coast. Captain Charles More's search for the Great Pacific Garbage Patch is chronicled in this documentary book.

The book is a fast-paced, easy-to-understand read that alternates between Captain Mohr's fight against plastic pollution and the realities of the marine trash problem.

The fact that marine plastic litter is a pollution carrier is also examined in depth, as are the contributions of Japanese researchers as you continue on.

'Plastics harming our oceans,' National Geographic Japan, June 2018.

This publication provides a concise summary of why plastic pollution in the ocean is an issue. It's a visually appealing and documentary-style read.

Because it is translated from English, there is a gap between what individuals can do to protect themselves from plastics and what they can do in Japan.

プラスチックの海―おびやかされる海の生きものたち / The sea creatures are threatened by the plastic sea.

It was first published in 1995. It was most likely the first book in Japanese to discuss the dangers of plastic pollution to marine life.

It explains how seabirds eat plastic waste, how abandoned fishing gear entangles marine creatures and sea turtles, and gives examples of ducks consuming plastic debris.

Surprisingly, the results of a survey of microplastics (at a time when the word "microplastics" was not widely used!) drifting along the Ogasawara coast and on the ocean surface in Hokkaido, Japan, were also published. Other (at the time) national and international initiatives to combat marine trash are also discussed in depth.

海ゴミ−拡大する地球環境汚染 / Global pollution is increasing due to marine litter.

In 2007, a book was produced about rubbish that washes up on Japanese beaches and its impact.

The book illustrates the reality of litter that comes to Japan from China and South Korea, as well as Japanese litter that travels overseas, through the implementation of the 'Lighter Project,' which estimates the nation of emission from the letters and numbers written on disposable lighters (to the Central Pacific).

アニメ作画のきほん (~キャラクター&メカ~) /

This book will be highly valuable as a reference for 'Omosha' posing even if you don't make time-lapse or animated films.

Even if you merely glance at it, this book, unlike most 'posing collections' of human models, is full of 'jumping,' 'punching,' 'kicking,' and 'backflipping' actions, thus it is guaranteed to be a helpful collection of ideas for 'Omosha.'

Both 'time-lapse photography' and, of course, 'Omoshasha' are not studies, but if you attempt to master them, you will find that they are extremely deep. If it's Omoshasha, it's about 'composition,' camera models and lenses, 'how to capture light,' and, if you go deeper, 'how to construct a story,' and if it's this 'time-lapse photography,' it's about 'human movement,' and other roadblocks will surface if you want to take it a step further.' Some people may find it 'difficult' or 'difficult,' but I believe it's a very lovely thing to be able to 'experience growth,' depending on how you look at it. And, happily, there are now locations where you can 'post' what you've created, including on social networking sites, so you can keep yourself motivated by challenging yourself and receiving feedback.
