Week 13 :

After I got the feedback that I can explore this research with visual analysis, I tried to do survey to decide which main character to be used for it. As a result, I did the analysis with “Naruto Uzumaki” from “NARUTO”, “Jibanyan” from “Yokai Watch”, “Inu Yasha” from “Inu Yasha” and “Kitaro” from “GeGeGe No Kitaro”. Hence it’s compared exploring the feature of yokai characters as visual analysis.

●Reflections

– The features of yokai (specters)

I was scared when I first heard the word 'yokai,' but this was owing to the varying definitions of yokai in different nations. A bizarre creature with an even more iconic terrifying sense, a power that people lack and that frequently destroys humans. The image of a yokai in Japan is rarely that of a completely wicked yokai. There is always a two-sided nature, and Japanese yokai have both good and evil features. From a content standpoint, situations can be identified where the archetype of the character who became a wicked yokai was a nice one. They are also real-world projections from the human psyche. Individuals who are archetypes of the actual world can be enjoyed and savored by viewers of content involving such characters. The Japanese content sector's creative processes, which develop characters with charm and energy, will be the key to a breakthrough in the global content industry. The creative approaches of the Japanese content industry, which develop characters with charm and energy, will be crucial to the content sector's progress in other nations.

– The relationship between its culture and society

A yokai is an uncommon being with enigmatic and odd phenomena or powers that are beyond human explanation, according to Japanese folklore. They are remarkable beings endowed with unknown powers capable of causing or causing bizarre and unexpected things beyond human comprehension. Yokai and demon gods have long been feared and worshiped by humans. It's either something created by the imagination or something that is truly human in appearance. They are supposed to be either from the original mind or to exist in a form that is really alien to humans. To put it another way, mankind's instincts include dread and curiosity in things they don't understand. Curiosity is an incongruent psychological condition. As a result, much media output uses the Japanese yokai culture as a reference point. Characters in the content aren't chosen just on the basis of their attractiveness. Although the characters in the material share a simple appearance, the stories' meanings and the reasons for their transformation into yokai are distinct. This data collection has looked at the development of yokai imagery up to the present.  It's possible, though, that new meanings will be added to them, as the current "yokai watch" symbolizes. Instead, the yokai culture has persisted in renewal, resurfacing in various media in accordance with each age. The majority of yokai are made by making use of knowledge and information about yokai that have been gathered over time, to summarize the method of yokai creation. Various techniques have been used to recreate spirits, including employing elements from yokai paintings already in existence or giving written records of yokai terminology a physical shape.  The representative Japanese animated films are all heavily influenced by yokai culture and historic traditional cultural customs. Not only in the appearance of the numerous characters, but also in their content.Furthermore, while there are distinctions among Japanese people depending on where they come from, traditional cultural mythology and yokai culture have a strong influence on them. The study also discovered that the Japanese have a high sensitivity to traditional cultural customs and are influenced by them, albeit this differs by location.

– Reflection Report

As a positive point of this opportunity, I could learn how to explore the potential to create the character design through yokai culture and the relation between the culture and media content, digital animation from this research project. This experience is absolutely important for me to get the process of learning animation as well. Additionally, I could learn some new words and grammar in English. That is why I also could learn English. On the other hand, this project was kind of difficult and complicated for me to do as well. I have never written a lot of sentences with my own words like this, so I just took a lot of time. I supposed that I’m not good at writing and expressing myself in sentences, but I would like to get this skill as well.
